The Rise of Energy Storage Systems in a Decarbonizing World

The global power grid is undergoing its most significant transformation since its inception, moving from a centralized, fossil-fuel-based system to a decentralized, renewable-rich network. At the heart of this transition lies the need for flexibility, a need that energy storage systems uniquely fulfill. By storing excess energy when supply exceeds demand and discharging it when needed, storage is the essential enabler of a reliable, resilient, and low-carbon energy future. Insights published by Market Research Future highlight that the market is on a steep growth trajectory, underpinned by the imperative to integrate renewables and modernize the grid.

The Scale of Market Growth

The energy storage market is experiencing explosive expansion, valued at approximately USD 32.4 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 226.2 billion by 2035, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.5%. This acceleration stems directly from two structural catalysts: the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act's (IRA) standalone storage investment tax credit—which unlocked roughly USD 7.5 billion in project financing within its first eighteen months—and China's 14th Five-Year Plan mandates requiring provinces to pair at least 10% of new renewable capacity with multi-hour storage. Together, these policies have shifted storage economics from a cost-of-reliability calculation to a revenue-generating asset class.

The market is characterized by a medium level of concentration, with the top five players collectively holding an estimated 38–44% revenue share. Chinese cell manufacturers dominate on cost and volume, while Western players differentiate through software, grid-code compliance, and long-term service agreements.

Key Drivers: Mandates, Costs, and Integration

The market is being propelled by several powerful forces. Federal and state storage mandates are a primary driver, with California's CPUC mandating 11.5 GW of new storage procurement through 2032 and New York targeting 6 GW by 2030. These binding procurement volumes give developers bankable offtake certainty that reduces financing costs, translating directly into faster deployment.

Cell chemistry cost reductions are another critical driver. Lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) pack prices dropped 27% between early 2023 and late 2024, reaching roughly USD 118/kWh at the system level for four-hour configurations. This has made LFP the dominant chemistry for stationary storage, displacing nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries. Renewable integration mandates are also a key driver, with China's National Energy Administration requiring new solar and wind farms to pair storage capacity equal to 10–20% of their nameplate rating.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite its promise, the market faces significant hurdles. Interconnection queue congestion in the U.S. holds over 2,600 GW of proposed projects, with average wait times exceeding 5 years. Lithium and critical-mineral price volatility complicates long-term procurement. However, these challenges are driving innovation in alternative chemistries like sodium-ion and in business models like storage-as-a-service. The long-term success of the Energy Storage Market will depend on its ability to overcome these barriers through technology diversification, policy reform, and market innovation.
