Since your lady is expecting 32 weeks and a few days, are you a bit worried about the uncertain labor and your women need to give birth on a plane? No need to worry about anything, because most airlines now have professionally trained emergency support teams to handle such situations. For example, they are thoroughly instructed on how to handle a birth on a plane, if it ever happens.

Guidelines On Woman Giving Birth on a Plane

Genuinely, most of the airlines do not prohibit pregnant women from flying unless they are 36 weeks pregnant without realizing their labor. But if it happens, an expectant mother starts moaning of labor in midair, flight attendants:

  • Firstly, alert the captain and may relocate the passenger more private area.

  • Or instruct all passengers around her to shift.

  • Find out if the medical professionals (doctors, nurses, or paramedics) are on board to get the delivery done.

Are you wondering what if no doctors or nurses are on board at the moment? Nothing to be fret about so far! Most aircraft carry a first-aid kit and an emergency medical kit, including scissors, sterile gloves, clamps, and basic supplies. And get the delivery done successfully by well-trained attendants.

How Does Flight Attendants Assist Women Give Birth on a Plane?

Most airlines have given their flight attendants special training on emergency situations, such as an in-flight birth. Since they are trained by the doctors themselves, they are entitled to use the emergency medical kit whenever required.

Here’s how they proceed to assist women in receiving the baby. Before undergoing treatment:

  • They make an announcement about a medical emergency and request that any available doctors or nurses report to the designated area near the women in labor.

  • Additionally, they alert the pilot about a women in labor on board so that an effective diversion can be made.

  • Instruct the passengers seated around the pregnant woman to move and create space for her. Set up a makeshift area by involving blankets, pillows, and sterile supplies.

  • Finally, the flight attendants proceed with the women’s delivery on a plane by themselves when doctors are not identified. They support the woman about to deliver a newborn; the attendants reassure her and guide her in breathing.

Once the baby is born successfully, the cabin crew member gently clears the baby’s nose, mouth, throat, and windpipe (collectively, the “airway”) to allow breathing.

Additionally, the crew member uses a clamp from the emergency medical kit to carefully clip and cut the umbilical cord.

What Do I Suppose to Do If My Lady Starts Labor?

Though there is no sign of a premature baby in the report, still, if prelabor starts for your woman, you are highly urged not to panic. Instead, look for the cabin crew around you and inform them about your partner in labor so that they may notify the pilot and find the professional medical team. It’s your responsibility to comfort your wife with supportive words; for example, don’t worry, I’m with you, we’ll get through this together.

Women Give Birth on a Plane: What Citizenship Will be Granted to New Born?

Don’t get into the trap of misunderstanding that if your women give birth on a plane, 6000 feet above the European land will grant European citizenship to your newborn. The nationality of your newborn depends on the parents' nationality. Generally, as provided by the government rule, babies born in the air are given the father’s nationality.

Do you have a doubt, “What if you’re unmarried?” Marital status does not block or change the citizenship right. So, be stress-free about the citizenship of your newborn during the flight. Whether you’re unmarried or your partner dies, your nationality will be considered for the citizenship of your newly born child. Instead of this, if you are married and deliver a child during the flight, your newborn will generally inherit your husband’s nationality. Still, we advise you to acknowledge government nationality laws for a clearer understanding.

How Birth Certificates Work When a Baby is Born on an Aeroplane?

Since in-flight births are rare, occurring once in a million passengers, having doubt on birth certificate for inflight newborn from the affected travelers sounds unnatural. If a baby is born on an airplane, the birth certificate is usually released by the government authority of the country where the aeroplane lands. While airlines inform the authorities about the incident, the legal record of birth is registered by civil registries. Usually, “born in flight” or “aboard aircraft” is noted as the birthplace on the birth certificate, along with the parents’ details. In general, the birth certificate itself serves as proof of birth, not proof of nationality.
