Three players have realized their lifelong dream of signing an NFL contract only to retire le s than a month later. Alex Bullock, a wide receiver from South Dakota State, is the latest. He retired from the on Monday. He joins Le'Veon Mo s ( ) and Squirrel White ( ) in this new trend. It all feels a bit surprising, and like the timeline doesn't quite add up. Why are undrafted rookies retiring so fast? There's no way to know for sure, and each case is probably different. What we do know is that these retirements took place after rookie minicamp. These players got a chance to see themselves in an NFL building and on a field with other pro hopefuls. Could that have informed their overall belief in making, or not making, a roster? Could the coaching style have resulted in pe simism about their chances? Injuries are also a very real po sibility. If a player worked hard to get into an NFL setting, but really was too hurt from their college days to continue on smoothly, maybe the best accomplishment they could hope for was the final recognition of being an NFL player for a few days. These players may eventually open up about what happened.
