Diabetic Ulcers: Causes, Prevention, and Treatment Considerations

Diabetic ulcers are open wounds that can develop in people with diabetes, particularly on the feet. Diabetes can affect nerves, blood circulation, and the body's ability to heal wounds, increasing the risk of serious foot problems.

One important factor is diabetic neuropathy. Nerve damage can reduce sensation in the feet. A person may therefore fail to notice a blister, cut, pressure point, or small injury. Continued pressure or friction can cause the wound to become larger.

Reduced blood circulation can also interfere with healing. When tissues do not receive adequate blood flow, oxygen and nutrients may not reach an injured area efficiently.

Diabetic ulcers can become infected if they are not treated appropriately. Infection may cause redness, swelling, warmth, drainage, unpleasant odor, or increasing pain. However, people with significant nerve damage may not always experience severe pain even when an infection is present.

Daily foot care is an important part of prevention. People with diabetes should inspect their feet regularly for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, cracks, or changes in skin condition. Wearing properly fitting footwear can help reduce pressure and friction.

Keeping blood glucose levels within the target range recommended by a healthcare professional may also support overall health and wound healing.

Treatment for diabetic ulcers depends on their size, depth, location, infection status, circulation, and other factors. Medical care may include wound cleaning, dressings, pressure relief, treatment of infection when present, and management of underlying circulation or metabolic problems.

Patients should not attempt to remove dead tissue or treat an ulcer with household remedies without professional guidance.

A wound that is not healing, becomes increasingly red or swollen, produces drainage, or is accompanied by fever should receive prompt medical attention.

People with diabetes should take foot wounds seriously because seemingly minor injuries can sometimes progress into more significant complications.

Understanding diabetic ulcers and their risk factors can encourage early detection and appropriate care. Regular foot examinations, professional diabetes management, appropriate footwear, and prompt treatment of injuries can all contribute to better foot health.
